Future Designers at Work
We see a new informality in modern coffee shops that demands furniture that is simple yet striking. A brief best answered by the next generation of designers, so we asked the students of Nottingham Trent University.
Here we spotlight Project Hem, a functional, lightweight and playful stool and bench system designed by Daniel Davies.
Fourth-year product design student Dan Davies takes a hands-on approach with Project Hem. Rooted in an appreciation for craftsmanship and manufacturing processes involving sheet metal the name Hem derives from a key manufacturing process integral to the stool’s construction, Hemming. Hemming is a common sheet metal technique, creating smooth and durable edges enhancing both the aesthetics and user comfort, reflecting Dan's commitment to making products not just visually appealing but also inviting to handle and use.
“My understanding and appreciation for sheet metal arose after I completed my placement last year in Rotterdam; where I worked for two design studios and learnt first hand how sheet metal can be manipulated to create complex and beautiful forms.”

For Dan, the most rewarding aspect of the project was witnessing the transformation from sketches on paper to a tangible, finished product. “As soon as I received the parts back from the powder coaters and assembled them for the first time, it felt absolutely amazing,” he adds “it is definitely the best piece of work I have produced at university, and the end product surpasses all my initial aims and objectives.”
Looking ahead, Dan plans to refine Project Hem further, by optimising the joining method between sub-assemblies. Testing rivet nuts as an alternative fastening solution to improve the ease and efficiency of assembly. Additionally, to complete the Hem range Dan aims to add a complementary table version.
Beyond Project Hem, Dan has ambitious plans for 2025. One being to showcase his work at New Designers, an exhibition that offers emerging talent a platform to gain exposure and connect with industry professionals. Dan said, “This has always been an ambition of mine, it’s a fantastic opportunity to be noticed by other designers and employers.”
Alongside his aspirations for Project Hem, Dan is exploring other furniture concepts one of particular inspiration to Dan involves creating a modular unit that relies entirely on rope knots for assembly eliminating the need for hardware. He hopes to develop this idea further and bring it to life in the future.
With a clear vision and an unwavering dedication to craftsmanship, Dan is poised to make a significant impact in the world of furniture design. His journey with Project Hem is just the beginning.
